System Utterances may belong to all categories of Searle's classification of speech acts. While most system utterances belong to the Searlean categories of directives, other speech acts are less frequent. Expressives are only successful when the user ascribes human properties to a program or when the speaker is obvious. It was shown that dialog boxes do not always correspond to Grice's Cooperative Principle.
