Upset DiagramĀ

An Upset diagram is a scalable alternative to Venn diagrams, particularly effective for visualizing intersections in large sets. Instead of overlapping circles, it uses a matrix-style layout where dots indicate set intersections and bars represent the size of each combination.

This chart type is common in bioinformatics, where researchers compare gene sets across conditions, or in customer analytics, to show combinations of user behaviors such as visiting, purchasing, and subscribing. For example, you can visualize how many users performed all three actions, only one, or any specific combination.

Upset diagrams are ideal when the number of sets exceeds four and when detailed analysis of set relationships is needed. They provide precise insights that are hard to glean from traditional Venn diagrams.
