Slate

Last week, the show “Die Sendung mit der Maus” showed how slate is mined, processed, and then used for roofing. Everything was well explained and easy to follow. But one question has been on my mind ever since: How did someone come up with the idea of digging in the earth, discovering slate, splitting it, and then putting it on a roof? Were they searching for coal, found the slate, and then thought about what they could do with it?

I also ask myself the same question with other things: How did people come up with the idea of grinding wheat and baking bread from it together with other ingredients?
